With all the sprucing up in the backyard, it was time for another change!
I’ve had this rug on my back patio for about 8 years. I leave it out all year-long thru rain and intense heat, and it has held up surprisingly well. It still looks pretty good….from afar! If you try to pick it up to move it…..it cracks!
Very crisp from the elements so it was time for a change.
I picked up this really, really inexpensive rug from Home Depot for $17 dollars!
I have this Large Moorish Trellis stencil from Royal Design Studios and decided to create a pattern.
Using some paint I had and a foam roller brush, I found the center of the rug and started my stenciling there!
It took a little pressure to get a deep color but it was super-duper easy!
I finished it off with a couple of coats of spray on poly to protect it from the elements.
Now, remember……this rug was $17 and it’s not intended to withstand years of weather. I do not plan on taking it in during the winter since that is the season we spend most of our time outdoors. Since I like to change things so often, even if it lasts me one year, for $17, I will be happy!
Before…..
……after…..
I’ll keep you posted on how she holds up!
Until next time……

What a deal! This is the rug you showed me when I was in the market, right? It looks great!
Awesome. You truly have a living area out there. It’s nice.
Angela,I love it the new rug really changed it gives it a pop.I always love to see what you are up to.Hugs Peggy
Amazing. I would never think to do that but may have to. Looks great.
The rug looks fantastic. It really looks great in that space and I love the stencil pattern.
That is so pretty! Since the rug was sooo expensive, I may just have to try my hand at this myself!!
I’m with you! If it lasts even a year you’ve gotten your moneys worth…it’s gorgeous and I hope it lasts several years!
Looks awesome. I thought it was a royal blue color at first. I really love it. I need a large rug for our deck, but just haven’t put any energy into finding what I want… This looks like something that would be perfect.
Angela…I love it…you did a fantastic job and it looks great in the sitting area…your patio is just so beautiful!
Very nice job on the rug, but I am curious you said you sprayed it with a couple coats of spray of polly, was it like a like a laquer or some finishing spray like that?
An amazing idea, I really love how you have made an extraordinary piece of carpeting from a totally inexpensive Home Depot item. I am a bit curious, though, how ate you going to maintain the rug. Do regular carpet cleaning rules apply, or will you treat it with special products?
Angela, your rug is great! How’s your back? You did a lovely job on the rug!
wow, you did such a great job, no bleed under? that would be what would happen to me? it looks fabulous!! thanks for all your sweet comments, Angela, I so appreciate you always leaving a note!
Hi Angela,
I signed up to stalk ….. err follow you, since I have already followed you from Hometalk. I have been looking for an area rug that I could afford and decided indoor/outdoor was the only way to go for me (with 8 fur babies). And I seriously have been looking for over a year and the cheapest I have found was around $150 and more with S&H, so thank you EVER so much for the tip on this rug. It is now $17.88 + tax and I have a Home Depot close enough to pick it up at the store. Now I am debating on one or two. I need one for after I redo my living room floor and would love to have a couple scatter rugs (considering cutting one in half) for each side of my bed in my tiny bedroom. I am so thrilled you shared this for us all. And I don’t know if others have a Dollar Tree Store in their area, but they sell tons of great stuff for ONE dollar, including plastic drop cloths, sand paper, brushes…… haven’t found affordable for me stencils yet though.
Thank You So Very Much! From Sheryll & Critters in Florida.
Awesome Angela…you know i love me some stenciling. I love your giant Jenga game too, great game to play with the family.
It looks great, Angela! The stenciling makes it look so chic. Yet another fantastic addition to your gorgeous outdoor space! Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend, friend!

Never in a million years, would I have guessed that was stenciled! I’ve been dying to do some stenciling! I’ve gotta get on it – your rug looks great!
That is a perfect solution for a couple of red-stained decks that show every footprint and speck of dirt. I can’t wait to try it!
